Mary Kay Jackson

Rotary and the Provision of Water in Northern Ghana

Sep. 12, 2024 1:01 a.m.

Mary Kay Jackson, the daughter of local Rotarian Dan Clinton, was raised in Houston and holds civil engineering degrees from Texas A&M and Stanford University.  After a brief stint in the oil industry, Mary Kay practiced civil engineering in Atlanta, Georgia, for 20 years designing water infrastructure for municipal clients.

In 2006, Mary Kay moved to Ghana, West Africa, and joined the staff of the Methodist Church Ghana to create their Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) program.  In 2017, she returned to Houston and joined the staff of TMS Global, where she currently is the Director of Strategic Initiatives. She continues to maintain an active water ministry in Ghana.

Over the past 18 years, Mary Kay has constructed 300 boreholes for villages, clinics, and schools in Ghana.  She served for 9 years as the Managing Director of Pure Home Water, a Ghanaian social enterprise that manufactures ceramic pot filters for household water treatment.  During her tenure, Pure Home Water constructed its manufacturing facility and grew from 4 to 25 employees, mostly local women potters. To date, Pure Home Water has provided over 30,000 filters to households in Ghana, including as part of two Rotary grants.

Nurit Gery

Discuss her High School in Israel, Younited.

Sep. 19, 2024 7:01 a.m.
Nurit Gery - Managing Director and Co-Founder of Younited

Nurit is a social entrepreneur who decided to move from a successful career in the commercial world to the nonprofit sector. The catalyst was a three-week volunteering stint with her husband and teenage children at an orphanage in Zimbabwe. This life-changing experience showed her that this was the moment to use the transferable skills from  her extensive commercial and marketing experience to create a project that had the potential to create real, long-term impact both within Israel and beyond.
Younited (formerly GHIS) was envisaged in 2017 and, under Nurit’s leadership and vision, only a year later it opened with a full cohort of local and international students and staff, ready to compete in quality with international schools worldwide.  Partnerships with relevant government agencies, the International Baccalaureate Organization and a handful of donors who understood the value of  this ‘start-up’, ensured that the foundations for quality and sustainability were in place.  Since then, Nurit’s outreach skills and her ability to engage and include people has attracted a network of international partners, friends, volunteers and supporters from  around the world.
Nurit’s commercial work experience spanned Israel and the U.S,  with an emphasis on senior management, marketing and sales, entrepreneurship and business development. Prior to establishing Younited, Nurit worked for 20 years at the pharmaceutical giant, GSK, where she was a Business Unit Director.
Nurit has an MBA from the USF, California  and a BA in Biology from the Technion, Israel.

Caroline Hassell, DAR

Camp Logan and the Evolution of Memorial Park

Feb. 06, 2025

Caroline Hassell is a 5th generation Houstonian.  She graduated from St. John’s School, started at UT-Austin and then graduated from Stanford University. Her first job out of college was with a private rocket company (that rocket blew up off the Texas Gulf Coast). She earned her MBA from Rice and worked for Compaq Computer and TeleCheck until “early retirement.”

She’s still pushing her kids towards “adulting” while she volunteers and does genealogy and historical research.  She’s active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and another genealogical organization, and served as Regent of the John McKnitt Alexander Chapter of NSDAR for the past four years.  She still volunteers for her children’s former schools and at her church.

During Covid, she worked on some really “down-the-rabbit-hole” projects, one of which resulted into deep research on the 200+ Harris County Soldiers who died in World War 1.  That led to more research on Camp Logan here in Houston.  Caroline is now serving on an advisory committee for the Memorial Park Conservancy, which is planning Memorial Groves, the “remembering” part of Memorial Park under development and part of the larger 10-year plan started in 2015.

Caroline’s husband Jim just retired.  They have a techy son, a recent UT-Dallas Computer Science graduate, and a daughter (a recent grad of Lamar and the FFA program which has been supported by the West U Rotary for many years); she’s at HCC with a hope of working with animals in the future.

Ann Whitlock, Founding Director, Connect Community

The Role of the Community Quarterback in Community Building

Feb. 20, 2025

ANNE WHITLOCK has lived and worked in
five countries, starting in the Peace Corps in
Mali, West Africa and then moving to Chad,
Costa Rica, Mexico and back to the US. She
speaks fluent Spanish, some French and a
smattering of Bambara. These experiences
gave her a sense of what it’s like to be pulled
from one’s roots and transported to a new land
with cultural and language barriers.
She has served as Founding Director of
Connect Community since 2016, a holistic
revitalization effort in Gulfton/Sharpstown
based on the Purpose Built Communities
model. The model focuses on building great
communities by wrapping around schools to
build aligned health and wellness
infrastructure, a cradle through career
education pipeline, economic vitality and
mixed income housing options.
She has the privilege of working with
newcomers from all over the globe who have
landed in Houston to seek better opportunities
for themselves and their families.
Prior to Connect Community, she worked as
the Program Director for the Community Clinic
Funders’ Collaborative at the Harris County
Healthcare Alliance working to improve
sustainability and collaboration in the Houston
healthcare safety net system. She worked at
the Baker Institute and led the America’s
Project seminar for “Young Leaders” from
throughout Latin America. She also rode the
dot.com boom and bust wave in the mid-90’s
and survived her husband’s congressional
campaign in 2008.
She currently serves on the boards of the
Buffalo Bayou Partnership, Brazos Bookstore,
and UT Children’s Learning Institute and
served on the boards of Vecino Health
Centers and the East End Foundation.
She is married with three adult children and
lives in a converted fire station in the East End
of Houston.
