West U Rotary Happenings for the week of May 15, 2016 ….

If you missed last week, you missed a very special presentation. Bill Orlin, was a refugee from Poland and a survivor of the Holocaust. Bill and his family spent several years running and hiding throughout Europe. They eventually migrated  to Canada and the United States. Bill later was drafted by the US government to fight in the Korean War. He told the story of the amazing journey and the close calls his family endured to find eventual freedom. He presented the details of the events like they happened yesterday and also discussed the Houston Holocaust Museum. What a great presentation.

This week’s speaker will be Larry Gregory – the President of the Lone Star Flight Museum. Larry will discuss the new 130,000 square feet addition to the flight museum that is scheduled to open in February 2017. For 30 years, The Lone Star Museum honored the extraordinary aviation history of Texas and has been designated as the official Texas Aviation hall of fame.

This past week Carol Lester,  Terry Ziegler, Fritz Beich and I along with Lara, Maciej and other youth headed out to Camp For All to assist with some of the camp activities. We spent the morning assisting the campers with riding the horses. We had a great time and we hope to participate again next year.

Also this past week, we held our Paul Harris Society (PHS) dinner at Union Kitchen. We had a great time with approximately 40 participants from our club and other clubs in our district. We had guests from 9 different clubs join us for a fun fellowship evening. Thanks to Don Raskin for organizing the event. Everyone enjoyed the fellowship opportunity to talk to friends in the different clubs. Thanks to everyone who joined us for this special appreciation dinner.

We have one more club activity this month:
  • Saturday, May 21st is our monthly social – this month we will be kayaking down the Buffalo Bayou. There may still be room but spaces are going fast so reach out to Honey if you are still interested in participating.
