Happy birthday Rotary!

Jean West Evans - Executive Director for the Emergency Aid Coalition

Lots of spring activities.

West U Rotary Happenings for the week of February 21, 2016 ….

1905, oh what year.
  • The Ford Model F is produced
  • Einstein’s Theory of Relativity was born
  • Theodore Roosevelt is inaugurated as the 26th President of the United States
  • The first flight on Wright Flyer III
  • Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer were banned from the Brooklyn Public Library for setting a bad example
  • Trans-Siberian railway opens
  • 4 men in Chicago (Paul Harris, Gustave Loehr, Silvester Schiele and Hiram Shorey started a business club that met weekly and rotated between each person’s office - the Rotary club was formed and within a year the club became so large it became necessary to adopt the now-common of a regular meeting place.  Happy 111 birthday to Rotary!
Last week, our special guest Davis Adams – Houston Managing Director of Holliday Fenoglio Fowler  presented a summary and assessment of the Houston commercial real estate market. It is amazing to see how much real estate of all types - commercial, residential and industrial has been and is being built in Houston. I sure hope oil increases soon to fill up all this space.

This week, Jean West Evans, the Executive Director of the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC) will provide us with an informative update of some of the activities at EAC. We are thrilled to partner with EAC this year for our annual golf tournament on April 18th. The Emergency Aid Coalition collaborates to provide temporary assistance in the form of food, clothing and other basic needs, with an emphasis on serving the working poor. Please join us to learn more about what EAC is doing in the community.

This month’s Social was an evening of the music of Hoagy Carmichael at the Ensemble Theater followed by a pizza dinner. We had a small group but the show was great and the pizza was tasty!

We have several events and activities coming up in the next few weeks. Here is a brief list of the upcoming activities:
  • It is baseball season and with baseball comes the Challenger League dugout duties. Games are March 6th, April 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30 and May 7th. Come join us in the dugout or in the stands to cheer the kids on.
  • March 8th – Monthly Club Board meeting
  • March 12thStrike Out DIPG Bowl-a-thon tournament at Palace Lanes. We have a few teams participating. See Paul Cornett for details.
  • March 15thVeterans Care Packages at Sheltering Arms (we will be collecting toiletry supplies each Thursday leading up to the packing event). See Craig Friou for details.
  • April 12thWest U Senior Services Breakfast. Please see Judy Faulkner for details.
  • April 18th – our annual golf tournament at River Bend Country Club benefiting the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC).
  • April 28th – May 1st – Rotary 5890 District Conference in Galveston.  Book soon as rooms are selling out. Scholarships are available.
Words of “wisdom” to think about this week:
  • Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They must be changed regularly and for the same reason.
  • Acupuncture – a jab well done!
We are still looking for a few volunteers. If you are looking for an opportunity to get more involved in our club, here are a few positions you should consider:
  •   Are you an early riser? We are looking for someone to assist with the set up and take down for the club meetings. This is an important club position without a big time commitment.
  • Are you interested in participating as a Board member for the West U Rotary Foundation? We will be electing new Foundation Board members in March.
Please let me know if you are interested in serving in any of these important positions.

Have a great week. Peace!
