West U Rotary Happenings for the week ending January 9, 2016 ….

Ouch! Well football season is officially over in Houston – with mixed results. The Cowboys missed the playoffs – again. The Cougars surprised everyone and had an incredible season. Go Coogs! And the Texans – well let’s just say congratulations and good luck to Kansas City and we’ll just leave it at that.

Last week, we were honored to host a very special guest. Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson provided us an overview of the Human Trafficking problem in Houston and what the city and county are doing with the “First Chance” program. We could have asked questions for another hour. Perhaps Devon will return for another presentation.

This week, we have another exciting speaker. Have you seen Bridge of Spies? Very good movie! Our guest will be Francis Gary Powers. Gary is the son of the U-2 pilot that was shot down in Russia in 1962. Gary is the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of the Cold War Museum located in Virginia. Gary lectures internationally and appears regularly on the History, Discovery and A&E Channels. This week we will also be honoring 3 of our special club members. Please plan to join us for a very special meeting.

Tuesday evening is the annual All Club meeting. RI President K.R. “Ravi”  Ravindran will present the Celebration of Gifts. The All Club meeting is always a special evening for District 5890. Our sponsored Rotary District 5890 Disaster Aid Trailer will be on display at the meeting. As a reminder, if you would like to donate towards the tornado ravaged area of North Texas, please go to www.disasteraidusa.com.

Words of “wisdom” to think about this week:
  • If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, arborists debarked and dry cleaners depressed?
  • Why do they lock gas stations bathrooms? Are they afraid someone will get in and clean them?
Have a great week. Peace!
