West U Rotary Happenings for the week of March 20, 2016 ….

Welcome to March madness. It is the time of the year for Easter, spring break, azaleas, pollen, spring training and some awesome college basketball.  Part of the country is still being dumped with snow while other parts of the country are enjoying sunny weather at the beach. It is a great time of the year in Houston.

March 22nd marks World Water Day. Most of us take for granted that we can simply walk over to our faucet and enjoy clean drinking water. The fact is more than 2.5 billion people lack access to adequate clean water or sanitation facilities. At least 3,000 children die each day from diarrheal diseases caused by unsafe water. Rotary’s  water projects give communities the ability to develop and maintain sustainable water and sanitation systems and support studies related to water and sanitation. We have seen recently, even local communities in the U.S. have had to deal with unclean and unsafe water. Educating communities about the importance of clean water is one of Rotary’s six areas of focus. Have you ever thought about how much water we waste every day? Think about it next time you are brushing your teeth with the water running. Each of us can certainly become wiser consumers of water.

Last week, our special guest was Bob Fuller from Keels and Wheels hosted a town hall style presentation (due to technical difficulties) to discuss the exciting annual event in Seabrook on April 23rd – 24th. Car and boat enthusiasts from all over the country will gather in to showcase some beautiful unique cars and custom runabouts for the 21st annual Keels and Wheels.  This event benefits several organizations including the Boys and Girls Harbor.  For more information go to www.keels-wheels.com.

This week we have a special guest speaker that everyone knows. Our very own Carol Lester (Good morning, Carol!) will present to the club how to be a better mentor. One of the most important roles of the club is to help our new members feel welcome and comfortable with the club and with Rotary. It is an important role that we all could learn a few tips.  Join us for what should be an entertaining presentation.

On Monday, we had a great monthly social at Marquis II. Several members came out and enjoyed a little catch up time. Thanks to all who joined us for a fun and relaxing evening.

We have several events and activities coming up in the next few weeks. Here is a brief list of the upcoming activities:
  • It is baseball season and with baseball comes the Challenger League dugout duties. Games are April 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th and May 7th. Come join us in the dugout or in the stands to cheer the kids on.
  • April 12thWest U Senior Services Breakfast. We are looking for volunteers to set up the afternoon before and to prepare / serve the breakfast. Please see Judy Faulkner for details.
  • April 13th – our monthly Board meeting at 7 AM at the Merrill House (regularly scheduled for the 12th but we moved it back a day).
  • April 18th – our annual golf tournament at River Bend Country Club benefiting the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC). Please consider sponsoring a hole or making a donation.
  • April 28th – May 1stRotary 5890 District Conference in Galveston.Book soon as rooms are selling out.
Words of “wisdom” to think about this week:
  • What did the bartender say to the jumper cables when they walked into the bar? “OK, you two don’t start anything.”
  • Better to be silent and be thought a fool, then to speak and remove all doubt.
On that note I think I will just shut up. Have a great week. Peace!
