West U Rotary Happenings for the week ending October 24, 2015 ….
Howdy all! Well, we survived the remnants of a late season Pacific hurricane. Lots of well needed rain and probably more indoor chores accomplished in some time. And cooler weather again – fall is back with lots of festivals and events.

Last week, we celebrated World Polio Day with Rotarians around the world. Did you get to watch the video at www.endpolio.org and see some of the amazing things Rotary in partnership with UNICEF, WHO and the Bill Gates Foundation are doing to eliminate polio?  Last week our own polio experts – Terry Ziegler and Fritz Beich along with special guest Cecilia Cepeda Bloodsoe provided an interesting presentation and overview about Polio and the personal experiences.  What are Rotary and other organizations doing in these next critical months? Let’s continue to make this final push to end Polio in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In addition to our guest speakers, we also learned about the Little Free Library project. Members of West U Rotary are partnering with the City of West University to help fund these special community programs. We have a goal to build a Little Free Library in every park in West U. Are you interested in participating? Contact Tim O’Connor for more information.

Did you attend the 4th monthly social event? Several of us took a tour of Glenwood Cemetery – resting place for Howard Hughes and several other notable Houstonians including governors, mayors and philanthropists. . Afterwards we enjoyed dinner and beverages at Hughes Hangar. Mark your calendar for next month’s social – a Thanksgiving feast hosted by one of our own notable Houstonians. Details of the event will be shared soon.

Do you have a child, grandchild, niece or nephew who is interested in experiencing another part of the world for 9 months? Do you know that person who is intrigued to learn about other cultures and meet new friends from around the world? Contact Judith Snively or John Thornton with any questions you may have about this incredible opportunity.

This week, we are honored to host our District Governor – Nick Giannone. Nick, an emergency medicine physician, currently practices in Angleton, TX has been practicing medicine for almost 30 years. He met his wonderful wife Fabiola while in medical school and he has been married for 32 years. He will present our District 5890 membership, administrative and Foundation goals.

Please join us this week in welcoming our very special guest - District Governor Nick Giannone. Enjoy the fall weather and we look forward to seeing our members and guests on Thursday.

Peace!
