West U Rotary Happenings for the week ending September 6, 2015 ….

Howdy West U Rotary! Happy Labor Day weekend to all! Labor Day was originally proposed in 1882 to honor the American labor movement and the contributions workers made to the prosperity of the country. It was initially celebrated in conjunction with other countries on May 1st. In 1887 Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday and Labor Day became an official federal holiday in 1894. At some point in the new millennium women all over the country deemed Labor Day as the official “Bring out the boots” holiday. Look for boots to start showing up in Houston – even if the temperatures remain 90.

Our August membership campaign was very successful. We had at least 20 first time or returning guests join us for breakfast. Thanks to Larry Gray and everyone else who invited friends to attend our meetings. Keep inviting the guests for future meetings and make them feel welcome.  Remember: “They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made then feel.”

This past week we had a couple of very special guests – Dick DeGuerin and Paul Nugent who presented several entertaining stories about legendary defense attorney Percy Foreman.

This week our guest speaker is Kim Koehn, VP of the Gulf Coast Division of the American Heart Association.  Kim will provide us with an update on our local American Heart Association chapter and some of the community events.
