West U Rotary Weekly Newsletter – November 10th
Salute to Service and Rotary Foundation Month
November began at a brisk pace for West U Rotarians, and we are off to an inspiring start! Last week’s meeting was a tremendous kickoff to Veterans Recognition Month. We were honored to welcome Rice University President Reginald “Reggie” DesRoches, who delivered an energizing overview of the exciting initiatives underway at Rice. He concluded with a teaser about a major investment announcement that same afternoon—proof that great things continue to unfold right here in our community.
PDG Bob Gebhard set the tone for our discussion on honoring veterans, providing context for our club’s ongoing involvement in Operation Turkey. Under the steadfast leadership of Lucy Gebhart, West U Rotarians have helped deliver turkeys to more than 15,000 deserving veterans and their families throughout the area. Jack Hardin also shared heartfelt reflections on his own military service and the profound meaning it holds in his life.
Looking ahead, our Annual Veterans Day Luncheon will be held at the West U Community Center (Neighbors Room) on Tuesday, November 11th at 11:30 a.m. We’ll honor all West U veterans with a Mexican food luncheon provided and served by WURC members. Please contact John Barnes if you’d like to volunteer at this special event.
Community Service in Action
Our club’s commitment to community impact remains strong! We recently presented a check to The Women’s Home in advance of their Fall Luncheon on November 18th. In addition, our Fall Blood Drive was a great success—thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves and donated!
Veterans Day Reflection
This Tuesday, November 11th, marks the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I—the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, when the guns fell silent in the “war to end all wars.” Let us pause to remember that “the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.”
This Week’s Program
Join us for breakfast this week as we welcome Judge Jerry Simoneaux as our guest speaker. His presentation promises to be informative, timely, and engaging.
And don’t miss Rotary After Hours this Thursday at 5:30 p.m.! Courtney Boudreaux will be sharing the inspiring mission of Blood Cancer United.
Rotary Foundation Month
November is Rotary Foundation Month, a time to celebrate the heart of Rotary’s mission—doing good in the world. The Rotary Foundation transforms your donations into service projects that change lives both locally and globally. Through programs that support clean water, education, peace, and health, Rotarians like you make a lasting impact. Let’s take this month to reflect on how we can each contribute—whether through giving, service, or advocacy—to ensure this vital work continues to flourish.
A heartfelt salute to everyone,
Yours in Rotary Service,
Stephen B. Smith
President, West U Rotary Club
