Social: Experience Dyslexia - A Simulation
Feb. 22, 2024 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Dyslexia affects as much as 20% of people worldwide and often goes undiagnosed. Encounter firsthand what it’s truly like living with dyslexia, at the new free exhibit “Experience Dyslexia: A Simulation” at The Health Museum. Although dyslexia is known as a learning challenge, those living with it often visualize and think differently than most.

“Experience Dyslexia – A Simulation” is a hands-on experience for adults. Participants rotate among four interactive learning stations that simulate various language-related tasks similar to those encountered in the classroom and workplace. Time has been set aside at each station to discuss experiences.

Here is the link for folks to RSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dyslexia-simulations-at-the-health-museum-dyslexia-school-of-houston-tickets-811740968087?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl

Heart Strings by UNICEF-An Interactive Experience
Apr. 07, 2024 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

I'm excited share with you information about Heartstrings: Connection to the World's Children, a new interactive and immersive exhibit curated by UNICEF USA that will bring the global challenges faced by the young to the forefront. This multi-city exhibit will kick off in Houston and run from March 21 to April 7. It is part of a 13-city journey over the next two years that will bring this exhibit to over 200,000 people. The event represents a collaborative effort to connect communities with the realities of kids worldwide. The immersive display will be carried out across eight zones in Post Houston, each dedicated to highlighting core pillars crucial for the success and future of the world's youth. The first part of the exhibit talks about birth to a few years old and what it's like being a child as a way to connect people to the things that are important for children in those first 1,000 days of their lives. Other sections in the show explore themes such as education and the importance of being heard.

Spotlight on Polio Eradication
Rotary’s work to eradicate polio will be prominently featured. A photo and story will depict this life saving work, and we and our partnership with UNICEF will be featured. Rotary along with the Gates Foundation are the only two organizations named in the exhibit, and our logo will also be featured as a partner at the entryway. Our work will be shared with hundreds of thousands of visitors to the exhibit, and we're hopeful that many Rotarians will want to go to the exhibit with their families to take pride in our polio eradication efforts, attend as a special club outing or attract prospective members to join us. UNICEF USA is offering special pricing to Rotarians with 10% in gratitude for our longstanding partnership with a dedicated ticketing page.  The exhibit is family-friendly and available in both English and Spanish.

For timed-entry tickets and more details, click this.

To learn more about what you'll experience during this exhibit, please view the first 1:45 of this video or read more in a recent issue of Houstonia Magazine.

Members of the Rotary Club of West U plan to go as a group on Sunday, April 7, 2024 at 4:30 PM.  All Rotarians and their families are welcome to join us!

Nathan Tollett

George R Brown Convention Center

Apr. 11, 2024 7:01 a.m.

Nathan Tollett serves as Vice President, Citywide Convention Sales at Visit Houston where he is responsible for creating long term strategies to maintain Houston’s position as a premier meeting and convention destination. Most recognized for his creative client experiences, Nathan believes in providing targeted and customized solutions for all potential opportunities.

Tollett began his hospitality career as an event manager at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center in 2002. He was the primary point of contact for the facility, assisting many major conventions in hosting and executing successful events. Following that, Tollett accepted a job as a national account executive with Visit Houston, where he booked a variety of significant meetings and conventions in the corporate and association market.

Completing his first tenure at Visit Houston, Tollett then spent nearly two years as a national sales manager for the Las Vegas property, The Golden Nugget. That experience helped him round out the “hospitality trifecta”—giving Tollett the background from the facilities, destination and hotel perspective to better understand all of the aspects of the convention sales process.

Tollett rejoined Visit Houston as Director of Sales in 2009 and for the last eleven years has overseen the daily operations of the citywide sales team.

Meeting News honored Tollett as "Ones to Watch: 30 under 30” and he was also recognized in Connect Magazine as “Future Leaders of the Meeting Industry, 40 under 40” in 2011, and received the 2015 Maritz Global Events Supplier of the Year award.

Tollett holds a bachelor's degree in speech communications from Texas A&M University.

West U Place Independence Day parade & pool party
Jul. 04, 2024 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
West University Place Independence Day parade and pool party.  WU Rotary will be sharing a sponsor's booth with the John McKnitt Alexander Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Colonial Park Pool is the location of the party. Set-up of the booth begins at 8:00 a.m.  We will have a computer for flag subscriptions, information on memberships available, and be handing out miniature flags to the children.  We could use Rotarians to staff the booth in one-hour shifts from 9:00 until Noon, and use volunteers to help with set up and take down.

We also need Rotarians to attend the party and bring their families!  The more, the merrier!

Cold drinks will be available to all volunteers.  We will be under the trees at Colonial Park, so there will be some protection from the sun.
