Hey West U Rotarians,

Good morning! Remember what they taught you when you write a newspaper article? Utilize inverted pyramid style detailing all the important information first! For this week, there is no regular meeting, but we do have our social on Thursday evening at Adair Kitchen with special guest, Gaia Chevrere, our Rotary Youth Exchange student. Thank you, Rachal Mills, Rotary Youth Exchange Counselor and Brennan Reilly, Rotary Youth Exchange Officer, for all you do with this great program.

As we start to roll into September, per Ralph Cox, Community Service chair, we have an event working with Second Serving Pop Up Grocery midday of the 25th of September at the MD Anderson (Cavalcade) YMCA. These events take multiple volunteers, at least 12, and sign-up instructions will follow soon. We will need your help!

In case you missed last week's meeting (better have been a good reason!!), Dr. Steven Vaughn, President Elect, inducted a new Red Badge member, Roldan De la Guardia. We are delighted Roldan has become a member! Please reach out and introduce yourself to him. Thank you, Wayne Beaumier (Our District Governor in a few years!) for sponsoring Roldan.

This is more of a heads-up but, as we look at club expenses, we will need to make an adjustment (increase) with the breakfast charges for the satellite members and visitors. The current breakfast charge for these folks is $20, which does not cover our costs. No one likes surprises so I wanted to put this out there. We will be discussing this at the next board meeting in September.

Lastly, an issue that has raised its ugly head are emails that are not legitimate. We received one through club-runner and I am hearing of others directed to members. We do much of our communication via email and text so please be careful. If it's from me, I am always good for a phone call, double check!

Best regards,

Bentley

Speaking of Gaia

Rachel Mills and Lisa Dobey spent the day with the District's exchange students at in-bound camp.

You'll see "our" student, Gaia, is in the middle, wearing her St. Agnes jacket!

Thank you to all of our WURC and District members who make these life-changing exchanges possible.

9/3 Last Week to Help Us Support Covenant House

We will be collecting unopened boxes of granola bars, energy bars, and protein bars for the Covenant House at our Thursday meeting on 9/3. The bars are in support of the Covenant House "Guts and Glory" Obstacle Challenge, a major fundraiser for them. Don't have time to shop? Cash will also be accepted, so bring some to our next meeting and give it to Ralph Cox, and he will go buy the bars.

Nature Discovery Center--Bellaire

Meredith Wheeler brings a passion for community-building, inclusive leadership, and placemaking to her role as Executive Director of the Nature Discovery Center. A lifelong champion of safe, welcoming spaces where people and nature can thrive together, Meredith’s career has spanned nonprofit leadership, entrepreneurship, and grassroots advocacy.

Prior to joining the Nature Discovery Center, Meredith co-founded and led Sesh Coworking, Houston’s first inclusive-minded coworking space. She grew Sesh from a grassroots gathering into a well-recognized community hub, earning accolades such as the StartHER Grant from Texas Women’s University, the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce’s Allied Business of the Year award and the Houston Business Journal’s Outstanding Diverse Business award. Meredith also serves on the Executive Committee of the Houston ToolBank board, where she supports nonprofits across the region through equitable access to tools and resources. Her leadership is grounded in reciprocity, curiosity and integrity – values shaped by her deep personal connection to the natural world and her belief that belonging should be built into every space we create.

When she’s not nurturing inclusive, nature-rooted communities, Meredith is on her back patio at home with her husband Drew and their three spirited daughters – Vivian, Faye, and Juniper – listening to the birds and reflecting on her place in the greater ecosystem. To her, nature isn’t just a destination; it’s a guide, a teacher, and one of the most sacred spaces we share.
